Ways to elevate an empty space
Tip #1
Add Plants!
Adding plants to your space can greatly benefit you! Indoor plants have the ability to increase creativity, improve your mood, reduce stress, and eliminate air pollutants.
Spider plants, or chlorophytum comosum, don’t require constant attention. Acting as a natural air filter, spider plants can remove 95% of toxic formaldehyde.
Peace lilies are also easy to maintain, they don’t need much sun so they’re perfect for the shady spaces. This plant evokes a sense of peace and also has air cleaning properties, they help remove carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds, pollutants most likely found in paints.
One common house plant is the pothos, or Epipremnum pinnatum. This vibrant heart-shaped leave plant can lower indoor ozone levels which can make it easier to breathe and reduce risk of respiratory ailments.
As a decorating plant, use succulents and cacti. These plants require little care. Some succulents can increase humidity in a room but also have medicinal properties such as the Aloe Vera plant which can heal cuts, and burns.
Tip #2
Create A Reading Nook
If there is an open corner, or bay window area create a reading nook. With the amount of time we spend indoors having a reading nook available to sit and read, that isn’t a work desk, can open a new space to sit and relax. Add an accent chair with a throw blanket, an end table for your favorite drink, and a lamp for direct light to create a corner to relax and unravel from a busy day out.
Tip #3
Personalize
Decorating may not be fun for you but stylizing a space that is welcoming and fun for you is very important. An ever-evolving space can be filled over time. So, collect a few pieces that are meaningful to you such as:
family portraits
decorative books
artwork
cultural artifacts
Tip #4
Use Large Mirrors
Large mirrors can create the illusion of a space being bigger than it actually if wisely placed. Mirrors can increase “positive energy, attract prosperity, happiness, and abundance.” In feng shui, rounded angles and bigger mirrors can create an easy energy flow, while small mirrors can create a poor self-image, or mess with the energy in a room. Before placing your mirror ask yourself what you want more of in your space, and how will having a mirror make you feel? Place your mirror in:
living rooms
dining room
entryways
hallways
Tip #5
Built-In Bookshelves / Shelves
Built-in bookshelves can be ideal in decorating an empty wall or space in a room. Adding your favorite books and personalized items can make your space feel more like home. Hint: Removing the plastic covers of books can give a more cohesive look to your built-in bookshelves. If adding built-in bookshelves is not a choice, adding shelves in different tiers and heights can be a similar and more easy approach. Hanging shelves can be a great way to maximize space if your home is smaller. Ensure that your shelves are properly attached, leveled, and sturdy.
